Ways to have a balanced diet

To have a balanced diet is recommended by nutrition societies for a good reason. Every food – every piece of fruit or vegetable, every type of grain or legume, etc. – has a different combination of essential macro- and micronutrients.

What ends up on our plate and how well we supply our body with important nutrients is in most cases decided by ourselves. In today’s article you will learn how easy it is to bring variety into your diet:

  • 1 new food per week: For a balanced diet, it is not only beneficial to use the foods you already know differently, but also to try out new things. When you do your grocery shopping – or once a week, for example – choose a food that you don’t already know. As a result, you will also try out new recipes, which will lead to variety on your plate.
  • Choose seasonal foods: Each season brings different vegetables and fruits. This gives you the opportunity to buy what’s available in your own country. And as if by magic, the menu will change.
  • Eating the colours of the rainbow: Let your creativity flow and prepare your meals in a colorful way. Eating as colourful as possible will increase the variety of phytochemicals. These can be found in plants in the form of colourings, odours, flavours, protective substances, etc. and usually have a beneficial effect on health.
  • Both cooked and raw: For a more varied diet, you can also eat something raw in between the cooked meals during the day. For example a smoothie, whole fruit pieces or simply a colourful seasonal salad with your dishes.

With these ideas and motivation, there is nothing that stops you from a balanced diet!
